Ice Maker Slow or Making Small Ice

When an ice maker is slow or produces hollow, small ice cubes, water is usually entering the mold too slowly. A clogged water filter is the most common reason for this drop in flow. As a filter collects sediment, it restricts water flow to the fridge and ice maker lines.

Before you take apart your freezer or call for repairs, look at your water filtration first. Checking your internal fridge filter or external inline filter can quickly tell you if the issue comes from a simple filter clog or the household supply line.

Before you start. Shut off the water supply valve before you remove or replace an inline filter or work on the fridge water line. Run some water through any new filter before using the ice or drinking the water, following the flush steps on the box. If you notice leaking pipes or are not sure about plumbing work, call a licensed plumber.

A Clogged Filter Slows Flow

Your refrigerator ice maker relies on steady water pressure to fill each cube mold in a set number of seconds. The internal timer opens the water inlet valve for a brief window. If water flows with normal force, the mold fills completely. If the flow is weak, the tray only catches a splash of water, leaving you with small ice or slow production cycles.

A filter is built to handle a set amount of water, which is its rated capacity. Over weeks of daily use, particles trap inside the filter media. This natural buildup narrows the path for incoming water. As the filter approaches the end of its life, water flow drops noticeably at both the door dispenser and the ice maker.

Check the Filter Date and Light

Typical change intervals are rough guidance. Refrigerator filters generally need replacement about every 6 months, though the interval stated on the product page or manual always wins. For example, the Waterdrop WD-MXRC-1 replacement filter lists a filter life of 300 gallons (1136 liters) or 6 months, with a flow rate of 0.5 gpm (1.9 lpm).

Many fridge filter lights track time or water used, but they do not test the water itself. A household with high water usage can exhaust a filter well before six months pass. You should change the cartridge sooner if water flow slows or the indicator light turns on.

Inspect the installation date of your current filter to see if it is overdue.

  • Check the installation date written on the filter label or your household calendar.
  • Look at the filter indicator light on the fridge control panel.
  • Observe the water stream from the door dispenser to see if it trickles slowly.
  • Plan to replace the cartridge sooner if flow drops before the standard change interval.

Inline Filters on Ice Makers

Not every setup uses a cartridge hidden inside the refrigerator door or ceiling. Many homes use inline filters installed directly along the water line running behind the fridge or under the sink. Inline filters serve ice makers, fridge lines, RVs, and garden hoses.

If your refrigerator lacks an internal compartment, follow the supply tube behind the appliance to look for an inline canister. When an inline filter fills with sediment, it causes the exact same slow ice production. You must shut off the water supply before removing or swapping an inline unit to prevent leaks.

  1. 1. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall to locate the water supply tubing.
  2. 2. Trace the line back to find any inline filter connected between the shutoff valve and the fridge.
  3. 3. Check the body of the inline filter for age markings or a model label.
  4. 4. Turn off the water supply valve completely before disconnecting the filter lines.

Water Line and Valve Checks

If replacing the filter does not solve the slow ice issue, look closely at the supply line and the shutoff valve. The narrow plastic or copper tubing feeding the fridge can easily get pinched or kinked when pushing the appliance back against the wall. A kinked line chokes off water flow just like a blocked filter.

Check the home shutoff valve that feeds the line. Saddle valves or quarter-turn valves can accumulate mineral scale inside, or they might not be opened all the way. Make sure the shutoff valve is fully open. Inspect the tubing along its entire run to make sure there are no tight bends, flat spots, or signs of moisture.

Finding the Right Replacement Match

When a clogged cartridge is the cause, finding the correct match is straightforward. Fit is matched by model: search the model of your water system, the number on your old filter, or your fridge model. Many models list their model number on a label found on the side or front of a water system, on the old filter body, or inside the fridge on an interior side wall.

Waterdrop produces compatible replacement fridge filters designed to replace brand-name numbers. For instance, the Waterdrop WD-MXRC-1 replacement filter replaces GE MXRC, GE 1E1013, GE 46-9905, GE 9905, GE FXRC, GE FXRT, GE HXRT, GE GXRC, GE HXRC, GE PS220814, GE WR97X10006, and WD-MXRC. It also fits fridge models such as ZIS36, ZIS42, ZIS48, ZISB36, ZISB42, ZISB48, ZISS36, ZISS42, ZISS48, ZISW36, ZISW42, and ZISW48. Matching by these printed numbers ensures your replacement seats securely into the housing.

When to call a pro

If you inspect your filters and lines but find leaking pipes, low household water pressure at the main valve, or suspect a faulty internal fridge valve, stop and call a licensed plumber or appliance repair pro.

Questions

Why is my ice maker making hollow or small ice cubes?

Hollow or undersized ice cubes happen when the mold does not fill with enough water during the fill cycle. A clogged filter restricts flow, leaving the tray only partly filled before the cycle ends. Replacing an old filter often restores the flow rate needed for full cubes.

Does my fridge filter light tell me if the filter is clogged?

No, fridge filter lights track elapsed time or water volume rather than actual water quality or filter clogs. If your water has heavy sediment, the media can clog before the light turns on. You should change the filter early whenever flow slows down.

Do I need to turn off the water when changing a filter?

Turn off the water supply before changing an under-sink, inline, or whole house filter to prevent water from spraying. While many internal fridge filter heads have automatic shutoff valves built into the housing, turning off the water supply is required whenever working on external plumbing lines.

How do I find the correct model number for my replacement filter?

Look for the model number printed directly on the label of your old filter cartridge. You can also find your refrigerator model number on an interior side wall label inside the fridge compartment. Use either number to match compatible replacement filters.
